Web widgets are files that can be embedded into a site’s HTML code to customize a web display platform with content from multiple sources.
A weather widget displays the current weather on multiple websites, and the viewer benefits without needed to click through to the website that provides the information. Widgets from online retailers like Amazon.com enable the display of products on any third party website. On social networking sites like Facebook, individuals can display their favourite friends’ profiles in a single widget.
According to comScore, 147 million Internet users in the US (representing 81% of all Internet users in the US) visited a website in November 2007 that used a widget. The use of widgets is growing as part of the componentization of user-generated content.
